| Events at UH Campuses for the Week of August 6-12 |
This is the final week of classes in the second summer session. UH Manoa will hold commencement ceremonies next Sunday, August 13 (see below). No classes are scheduled for the week of August 13, and instruction for the fall semester resumes at all campuses on Monday, August 21, following the Admission Day holiday weekend.
UH Manoa Outreach College presents the film Two Friends, the story of two teenaged girls and their heartbreaking rush to adulthood. This 1986 Australian film is directed by Jane Campion. It will be screened on Wednesday August 9 and Thursday August 10, 7:30 p.m., Yukiyoshi Room, Krauss 12. Suggested donation: $3 general, $2 students, seniors, UH faculty and staff. Food, Health and Family in the New Millennium is the theme for the 4th Kalo Conference at Windward Community College, Friday August 11, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The conference is a prelude to the next day's Pacific Islands Taro Festival at WCC, and features health professionals including Dr. Terry Shintani, Dr. Jack Kloppenburg, Mary Brooks, Dr. Kimberly Clark and others. Conference fee of $20 includes registration, lunch and materials. In association with HPC Foods, the Taro Resource Center and the WCC Office of Continuing Education. The 12th Annual Pacific islands Taro Festival, "A Taste of Taro," is staged Saturday, August 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Windward Community College. Free admission. Guest chefs, a dialog on alternative agriculture, Pacific islands arts and crafts, taro exhibits and demonstrations, lectures and videos, music and dance. For more information, call 235-7433.

Sunday, August 13, 9:00 a.m. UH Manoa Summer Commencement, Stan Sheriff Center. UH Manoa is the only one of the ten UH campuses that conducts summer commencement ceremonies. Approximately 800 students are candidates for degrees this year, and about half of them are expected to participate in the program. An additional advisory with more detail will be issued during the coming week.
