Regents Approve Procedures for Presidential Search

The University of Hawai`i Board of Regents this week gave final approval to procedures that will guide the search for a successor to UH President Kenneth P. Mortimer over the next several months. President Mortimer announced on May 5 that he intends to step down from the presidency effective June 30, 2001.

The procedures follow earlier recommendations by the Board's Personnel Committee made public at the Regents, June 16 meeting in Hilo. Since then, the Board has retained a consultant firm Heidrick and Struggles to assist in the search.

The consultant firm will be developing a job description for the president's position after seeking advice and counsel from the university's internal and external constituencies. The consultant has scheduled meetings with more than 60 people in thirty separate sessions. The consultant will assist in identifying qualified candidates who might apply for the position. They will assist the Board's Advisory Committee and the Board in reviewing applications.

Procedures adopted today establish the Advisory Committee to consist of:

Four (4) members of the Board of Regents, one of whom would be chair of the committee

One faculty member from the Manoa campus

One faculty representative from Community College campuses

One faculty member representing the Hilo and West Oahu campuses (baccalaureate campuses)

One student representing the Manoa, Hilo and West Oahu campuses (research and baccalaureate campuses)

One student from the Community Colleges

A representative from the professional support staff

Five members of the community at large

A Community College provost

A representative from executive administrators of all baccalaureate campuses

* (Total of seventeen members)

Board Chairperson Lily K.Yao, commenting on today's action, said: "This is the major responsibility of the Board for the coming year. It is critical that we move ahead to assure a smooth transition to new leadership as President Mortimer prepares to step down."

"The Advisory Committee we established today includes five members of the general public, and we will be pleased to accept nominations from the public for this important responsibility."

Nominations for the community at large positions may be submitted to the University of Hawai`i Board of Regents, Bachman Hall Room 209, 2444 Dole Street, Honolulu, Hawai`i 96822. Telephone inquiries at (808) 956-8213; fax to (808) 956-5156.

Search Timetable:

The procedures approved by the Board today also include a timetable to be used as a scheduling guide during the next several months:

Appropriate announcements will be placed in the media locally and nationally; pertinent information will be made available to Higher Education Professional organizations.

The Advisory Committee will review all dossiers and create a non-ranked list of no less than five (5) semi-finalists, and then submit a recommendation to the Board for final review and consideration.

The Board will interview finalists.

September Advisory Committee appointment, announcements in the media

October-November reviewing of dossiers

November-December recommendation to the Board, background and reference checks, Advisory Committee report to the Board

January-February interviews and campus visits

February-March final decision and negotiations

*This allows 2-3 months for transition before President Mortimer steps down
