Back-to-School TIP SHEET:

August 22, 1997

Contact: Cheryl Ernst, (808) 956-5941

School begins Monday on all 10 University of Hawai'i campuses, with approximately 47,000 students expected at UH Manoa, UH Hilo, UH West Oahu and the seven UH Community Colleges. (Enrollment counts will not be available until the end of the registration period Sept. 8.)

Among those seeing an offspring off to college for the first time is James Michishima. As a lecturer in the College of Business Administration, he's already familiar with Manoa; still, he, wife Lynn and daughter Jann, who graduated from Mililani High School last spring, found the student-parent orientation helpful. The orientation included a campus tour, advice on various programs and services, priority registration appointment and a social function with UH President Kenneth Mortimer at College Hill. For a first-hand perspective on heading to college for the first time, contact James at 487-9002 or the Michishima family at 625-6347.

Courses to be offered at Manoa this year include:

· History of Rock and Roll (Music 477) and Music in Modern America (Music 370), both taught by Jay Junker. For information, call the Music Department at 956-7756

· Restaurant and Club Operations (TIM 311), taught by Carl Psaffenberg, and Legal Environment of the Travel Industry (TIM 361), taught by Dean Cost. For information, call the School of Travel Industry Management at 956-8946

· Japanese Film: Art and History (ASAN 325), taught by Lucy Lowers, 956-8589 and Chinese Film: Art and History (ASAN 330), taught by Cynthia Ning, 956-2692

To be directed to the appropriate instructors, call Cheryl Ernst or Donnë Florence, 956-8856

Students who want to apply to engineering but begin study at a community college can do so under a new "seamless enrollment" program devised by the UH Manoa College of Engineering. The program allows students to enroll in the College of Engineering but register at any UH campus, thus providing students more flexibility in completing prerequisite courses. For information, contact Assistant Dean Sheryl Nojima at 956-8404.
