Presentation Features Award Winning UH Composers
Six composers from the Department of Music at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa will present a public performance of their work at the Honolulu Academy of Arts on August 15 and 16. The performance is in conjunction with the 1997 Individual Artist Fellowship Program. The UH composers were six of the seven professional Hawai'i musicians awarded fellowships this year by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA). All seven recipients will make a presentation on both days at 7:30 pm. The following are the UH composers receiving $5,000 fellowship awards and their category: Lecturer Jay Kauka, contemporary Hawaiian; Emeritus Professor Neil McKay, orchestra; Assistant Professor J. Mark Scearce, orchestra; Emeritus Professor Allen Trubitt, chamber music; Assistant Professor Donald Reid Womack, orchestra and Professor Byron K. Yasui, band. Jerre Tanner of Kailua-Kona was the seventh recipient of the fellowship award. The Individual Artist Fellowship program was established by the Hawai'i State Legislature in 1993. The program encourages artists to remain and work in Hawai'i to reaffirm the importance of their cultural and economic contributions to the state. Governor Benjamin Cayetano presented the awards to the seven composers
on July 10 in his office. |
