Summer Commencement Exercises

August 16, 9 a.m., Stan Sheriff Center

Better late than never. It's been 30 years since Ernest Nishizaki completed his studies at UH, but he never got to take part in Commencement--till today. Now vice president and general manager of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki, Nishizaki returns to the Manoa campus to deliver this morning's Commencement Address and to offer to his own family and friends the same compliments and thanks that today's graduates will extend to their families.

Wayne Panoke, the first student appointed to the Board of Regents under a requirement enacted by the 1997 Hawai'i Legislature, will perform the oli (chant) opening today's ceremony. He will be accompanied by Noelani Arista, and Lee Ann Punua. Arista receives her master of arts degree in Religion (Asian Religions) at today's ceremony. Punua receives her bachelor of arts degree from the School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies.

Today's commencement is a family affair for Board of Regents Chairman Donald Kim, whose daughter-in-law, Ann Ellen Gillespie of 'Aiea, is receiving her bachelor arts degree. For the first time since he was elected to chair the Board of Regents, Kim will welcome graduates and their parents on behalf of the Board.

Ellen Grandjean has just completed a six-month practicum, working in the UH Office of International Affairs, to finish her work toward a master of arts degree from the University of Amsterdam. During her practicum, Grandjean has assisted with efforts to recruit more international students to UH. She has received permission from the University of Amsterdam to participate in today's ceremony at UH. President Kenneth P. Mortimer will make a special presentation to her following the conferring of UH master's degrees.
