Kate Xiao Zhou leads seminar on "Civil Rights Movement in China"

The meaning of civil rights in China is hotly debated: the Western perception of civil rights and the Chinese perception of civil rights are not the same. How do the Chinese view civil rights? These and other issues will be explored Wednesday, Sept. 1, when the University of Hawai'i Center for Chinese Studies hosts a free seminar on the civil rights movement in China. The seminar will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Tokioka Room (Moore Hall 319) at UH Manoa.

Seminar leader Kate Xiao Zhou is an assistant professor of political science at UH Manoa. A native of Wuhan, China, she experienced the Cultural Revolution and the modernization of China first-hand. Her book, How the Farmers Changed China, discusses the contributions the rural population made to the modernization process. It reflects her interest in how people affect policy and policy-making.

This event is the first in this semester's series of seminars offered by the UH Center for Chinese Studies. The public is welcome to attend and participate in the discussion. In addition, the seminars offer an opportunity for the public to meet UH professors and students and visiting Chinese studies scholars.
