THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR UH Research Funding for 199899 Sets Another Record The University of Hawai'i set new records for extramural research funding and funding from all extramural sources during the 1999 fiscal year. Funding for UH research and training grants and contracts from federal and international sources, other state agencies, other educational institutions and private foundations totaled $164 million for the fiscal year that ended June 30, up from $160 the previous year. The research portion of the extramural dollars was $93 million for fiscal 1999, up from $92 million last year and the third straight year that UH has set records for research funding. The figure represents a 20 percent increase over the last three years, said Alan Teramura, UH senior vice president for research and dean of graduate education. "These numbers indicate that our faculty is vigorous in pursuit of federal and state dollars and is doing extremely well competing with our peers nationally," Teramura commented. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, UH ranked 64th in the nation in securing federal research dollars during the 1997 fiscal year. "Based on our success during 1998 and 1999, we anticipate moving up in this year's ranking," Teramura said. UH received 14 grants of over a quarter of a million dollars during June. They included:
