UHM School of Nursing Awarded Federal Advanced Nursing Education Grant for PhD in Nursing Program The Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration has awarded the University of Hawai'i at Manoa School of Nursing nearly $1 million over the next three years for advanced nursing education. Specifically, the award will enhance the new PhD in nursing. The award period is from July 1, 1999June 30, 2002. The program will prepare visionary scholars capable of conducting culturally appropriate clinical scholarship and faculty who are prepared to teach in programs with culturally diverse student populations. The program was developed in response to a need for more doctorally prepared faculty to teach in baccalaureate and higher degree nursing programs across the mainland U.S. and in Hawai'i and the Pacific Basin. The program was developed by the graduate faculty at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa School of Nursing under the direction of Dr. Rosanne Harrigan, professor and dean, who has developed two other PhD programs in nursing. Dr. Barbara Molina Kooker, professor and associate dean, is the program director for this million-dollar project. The curriculum was approved by the Board of Regents in June, 1998. The inaugural class of seven students was admitted in Fall 1998. The funding means that nursing doctoral students will have additional resources for clinical research, world class consultants to refine the curriculum, and instructional design assistance to prepare for the new world of web teaching. In addition, this funding will provide additional important resources for the school and the University at a time when state support has been drastically diminished. |
