Civil engineering professor expands traffic webcam coverage on O'ahu A new page on the World Wide Web displays images from eight traffic surveillance and control cameras along the award-winning Interstate H-3 Highway. The website was created by University of Hawai'i civil engineering Professor Constantinos S. Papacostas, with cooperation from the Traffic Operations Center of the State Department of Transportation. UH College of Engineering Computer Facility Manager Warren Yamauchi provided technical support for the project. The URL (Web address) of the page is www.eng.hawaii.edu/hawaiidot. The traffic images "refresh" every few minutes and provide real-time information to the public. The new service complements an existing website and expands the geographic area on O'ahu that can be viewed on the Internet via traffic surveillance cameras. In December 1996, Papacostas (working with the Traffic Control Center of the City and County of Honolulu) launched a similar site (www.eng.hawaii.edu/Traficam) that now displays images from 68 city and county cameras extending from Middle Street in Honolulu to Keahole Street in Hawai'i Kai. "The cooperation between city, state and UH personnel on this project has been remarkable," Papacostas says. "This is a perfect example of how the University can work in partnership with the city and the state to help bring the benefits of high technology to the people of Hawai'i. Our college brings to the table special expertise that can add value to the services provided by line agencies. After all, at its core, engineering involves the application of technology to real-world problems. |
