| Kamehameha Schools' CEO to address graduating class |
Dr. Hamilton McCubbin, chief executive officer of Kamehameha Schools, will deliver the keynote address at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo's Fall Commencement ceremony, to be held on Saturday, December 16 at 9 a.m. in the University's New Gym. Approximately 173 candidates representing the College of Arts and Scineces, College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management, and the Ka Haka Ula O Ke`elikolani College of Hawaiian Language are eligible for graduation.
Named CEO of Kamehameha Schools in January 2000, McCubbin came to Kamehameha from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UWM) where he served as Dean of the School of Human Ecology since 1985.
Following his 1959 graduation from Kamehameha, McCubbin received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Family Science from UWM in 1964, 1966, and 1970 respectively, before pursuing post doctoral study at Yale University, the University of Minnesota, and Stanford University where he was an Andrew Mellon Fellow.
An internationally recognized authority in child and family studies with over 100 published professional articles and 25 books, McCubbin has served as an administrator or advisory board director to institutions such as: State of Wisconsin Council on Human Concerns & Services; the National Parenting Association; Kuwait International Advisory Committee for the Government of Kuwait; University of the United Arab Emirates; and the Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Program at the Presidio in San Francisco.
Included among his professional and academic administrative appointments are: Professor of Child and Family Studies and Director of the Family Stress, Coping and Health Project, both with the School of Human Ecology at UWM; Assistant Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station, College of Agriculture and Life Science, UWM; Director for the Center for Excellence in Family Studies, UWM; and Director of the Institute for the Study of Resiliency in Families, UWM.
Christine Loos will represent the graduating class as its student speaker.
A Liberal Studies major specializing in legal communications, Loos graduates with honors with a 3.96 grade point average.
Currently a reporter with the Hawai`i Tribune-Herald, Loos wrote for the campus newspaper Ke Kalahea, and contributed to various University newsletters such as Ka Lono Hanakahi and Ke Kumuhonua.
Loos is a member of the Big Island Press Club, the Rotary Club of South Hilo, and the Directors Guild of America.
