UH Manoa graduation stories Baccalaureate ceremony 9 a.m., Dec. 20, Stan Sheriff Center Ceremony expected to last approx. 2 hours; arena doors open 8 a.m. Graduates, families, well-wishers and spectators should anticipate traffic congestion and delays because of road repairs under way along University Avenue.
Pre-Commencement Party The School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies (SHAPS) will host its graduates at a pre-commencement breakfast buffet outside the Stan Sheriff Center, 7:30-8:30 a.m.
All in the Family Kori Koike receives a bachelor of arts degree in speech at the morning ceremony (9 a.m., Stan Sheriff Center). Her mother, Arlene Takako Koike, is a master's degree candidate in American studies (2 p.m. ceremony, Stan Sheriff Center).
Winning Athletes Among the athletes earning their most important letters Sunday morning are football defensemen Chris Shinnick (BA) and Eddie Klaneski (BA), volleyball favorite Sivan Leoni (BA), soccer player Poliala Paresa (BA), and Justin Stern (BArch).

Pre-Commencement Celebration The School of Public Health says congratulations and farewell to its graduates (all advanced-degree recipients) at a pre-commencement ceremony in Biomed B-103, 11 a.m.-12:30.
All in the Family II Matthew A. Claybaugh receives his PhD in American Studies at the advanced degree ceremony. When it comes time to "hood" him with the traditional regalia of a doctoral scholar, one of the people doing the honors will be Matt's father, Clinical Professor of Physiology John R. Claybaugh, filling in for Matt's dissertation committee chairman, David Stannard.
National Honors Michael Cheang of Singapore, who receives his DrPH Sunday afternoon, was selected this fall into the Minority Doctoral Student Leadership Development Program in Aging sponsored by the Gerontological Society of America and the National Institute on Aging. With additional travel assistance from the Japanese Women's Society of Honolulu, Cheang attended last month's annual meeting of the GSA in Philadelphia, where he presented some of the research that went into his dissertation on older adults' frequent visits to McDonald's.
Sound of One Hand Clapping? Among the intriguing dissertation titles listed in today's program is Jeffrey Albert Dym's "Benshi, Poets of the Dark: Japanese Silent Film Narrators and Their Forgotten Narrative Art of Setsumei, 1896-1939." Dym, of Washington, D.C., earned his PhD in history. Mary Elaine Perrien of Hollister, California, earns a PhD in psychology with her dissertation on "Community Notification and Treatment of Sex Offenders in Hawai'i." A PhD in economics goes to Kinping Tse of Honolulu for his dissertation on "Financial Reforms and Economic Consequences in China." Hong Kong's Anny Wong looked at "The Domestic Roots of Japan's International Environmental Policies, 1982-1995" in her political science dissertation.
The Advanced-Degree Crossroads of the Pacific Of 58 doctoral candidates, 25 list hometowns in 16 foreign nations; 18 are from 12 mainland U.S. states; and one is from Guam.
