All in the Family II

Matthew A. Claybaugh receives his PhD in American Studies at the advanced degree ceremony. When it comes time to "hood" him with the traditional regalia of a doctoral scholar, one of the people doing the honors will be Matt's father, Clinical Professor of Physiology John R. Claybaugh, filling in for Matt's dissertation committee chairman, David Stannard.

National Honors

Michael Cheang of Singapore, who receives his DrPH Sunday afternoon, was selected this fall into the Minority Doctoral Student Leadership Development Program in Aging sponsored by the Gerontological Society of America and the National Institute on Aging. With additional travel assistance from the Japanese Women's Society of Honolulu, Cheang attended last month's annual meeting of the GSA in Philadelphia, where he presented some of the research that went into his dissertation on older adults' frequent visits to McDonald's.

Sound of One Hand Clapping?

Among the intriguing dissertation titles listed in today's program is Jeffrey Albert Dym's "Benshi, Poets of the Dark: Japanese Silent Film Narrators and Their Forgotten Narrative Art of Setsumei, 1896-1939." Dym, of Washington, D.C., earned his PhD in history. Mary Elaine Perrien of Hollister, California, earns a PhD in psychology with her dissertation on "Community Notification and Treatment of Sex Offenders in Hawai'i." A PhD in economics goes to Kinping Tse of Honolulu for his dissertation on "Financial Reforms and Economic Consequences in China." Hong Kong's Anny Wong looked at "The Domestic Roots of Japan's International Environmental Policies, 1982-1995" in her political science dissertation.
