Summer 2000 at Peking University offered

For the ninth consecutive time, the University of Hawai`i at Hilo and Peking University, the most prestigious institution of higher education in China, will co-sponsor Summer Institute in Chinese Thought and Chinese Culture. The program includes lectures on Chinese culture as well as field trips to historical sites and cultural centers in China. The deadline for both registration and deposit is February 28, 2000. Space is limited.

The two Chinese culture study tours are being coordinated by Dr. John Hsueh-li Cheng, professor of philosophy at UH Hilo. "Peking University will grant two credits and issue a certificate," Cheng said. "Students will also obtain four credits from UH Hilo. The credits can be used to satisfy two UH English ëwriting intensive' requirements. In addition to the six regular credits, students can register for another 3-6 extra credits," Cheng added.

The tentative date of Tour #1 will be from May 14 to June 11, 2000 and focuses on central scenic, ethnic and historic China. The tentative itinerary includes: Honolulu -- Hong Kong -- Beijing -- Changsha -- Shaoshan - Changsha --Yueyang -- Changde -- Zhangjiaje - Chengdu -- Jiuzhaigou -- Dujiangyan -- Chengdu -- Zingong -- Chengdu -- Hong Kong -- Honolulu. The tentative cost is $3,430 for Hawai`i residents and $3,462 for non-residents.

The tentative date of Tour #2 is July 2 - 30, 2000. This tour focuses on Chinese culture and Christian churches. The tentative itinerary includes: Honolulu -- Hong Kong -- Beijing -- Xian -- Wuhan -- Wuchang -- Nanjing -- Suzhou -- Shanghai -- Hong Kong -- Honolulu. The tentative cost is $3,756 for Hawai`i residents and $3,788 for non-residents.

Free stops will also be given in Taiwan or Japan on the way back from Hong Kong as well as a stop in Hong Kong. Auditors are welcome, but must follow the normal registration process.

"Peking University and UH Hilo together will allow a substantial fee deduction ($578) for those who have previously participated in our UH Hilo-Peking University tour," Cheng said.

Cheng has served as adjunct professor and academic advisor to the Philosophy Department of Peking University since 1994. He is the author of numerous articles and books; most recently he has published a book entitled Zen, Confuciansim and Neo-orthodox Christian Theology in Chinese. He also serves as editor-in-chief of International Review of Chinese Religion and Philosophy. Cheng will give a series of lectures on Christianity, Western culture and Chinese culture at Peking University from January 17 to February 1, 2000.
