|UH Board of Regents appoint Kim, receive $11.1 million in grants|
The University of Hawai`i Board of Regents today approved the appointment of Karl E. Kim to be Interim Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at UH Manoa. Kim is currently a professor in the College of Social Sciences and chair of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. He fills the position formerly held by Thomas T. Bopp, who is returning to his faculty position as a professor of chemistry.
Kim has been at UH Manoa since 1987 after receiving his doctorate at MIT. He has been a member of the Manoa Neighborhood Board and was a Pacific Century Fellow in 1997. His appointment is effective February 20.
In other business
The Board accepted $11.1 million in gifts and research and training grants received during the one-month period through January 15, 2001. For the year-to-date, the value of such external funding coming into the university is $119 million, about 8 percent more than such funding received last year. The one-month figure includes $675,950 in grants to UH Hilo.
The Board also approved a lease with the Agribusiness Development Corporation to operate the UH-owned papaya disinfestation facility on Kaua`i.
