SAN FRANCISCOThe University of Hawaii at Manoas School of
Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) publication, "Geophysical
Monograph 128, Hawaiian Volcanoes: Deep Underwater Perspectives,"
was recently released at the 2001 Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union
held in San Francisco.
"Hawaiian Volcanoes: Deep Underwater Perspectives" is a collection of research papers on the deep underwater flanks of Hawaiian volcanoes and other geological features. It presents new data and interpretations of major consequence for the understanding of volcanic phenomena and features the latest bathymetric maps of the Hawaiian islands and reconstructions of the Nuuanu and Wailau landslides with modeling of tsunamis. The book also contains several papers highlighting results obtained by previous cruises around Hawaii not conducted by the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC).
The research was a collaborative effort by scientists from many universities and organizations in Japan, the U.S. Geological Survey, individuals from the Bishop Museum, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, JAMSTEC, and SOEST. UH scientists involved were Emilio Herrero-Bervera, Michael Garcia, Kevin T. Johnson, Stephen C. Leslie, Gary McCurtry, Gregory F. Moore, S.B. Sherman, John R. Smith and Denys Vonderharr, whom acted as science team coordinators onboard and/or editors, and contributed to numerous papers.
High-tech, deep-diving submersibles and research vessels of JAMSTEC were used during the one to two month field programs in the summers of 1998 and 1999, conducted by Chief Scientist Jiro Naka. This work continued this past summer and another cruise is scheduled for 2002.
