UH Manoa Summer Grads in the Spotlight Jan Minoru Javinar, director of Co-Curricular Activities, Programs and Services at UH Manoa, receives his EdD in educational administration at August Commencement exercises. Javinar, who lists his hometown as Kalihi, O'ahu, has worked in various Student Affairs positions over the years, so he is well known to recent UH grads, particularly those who were involved in student government, student publications or other co-curricular activities. His dissertation examines ways to improve Student Affairs practices. (No, he explains, pre-teens are not all angry all the time; there are identifiable triggers that provoke hostile feelings and behavior.) Fryxell, who received his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and his master's degree from the University of Saint Thomas, chose UH for his doctoral work because of its excellent community psychology program, something he learned about while service in the Peace Corps. He receives his PhD in psychology. Contact: Dale Fryxell, 956-2653. Mya Moe Hla of Yangon, Burma, undertook research in the much-talked-about area of postmenopausal women's health. Her dissertation, "The Relationship of Body Composition and Lifestyle Factors to Biochemical Markers of Bone Turnover in Early Postmenopausal Women," earns the international student a PhD in biomedical science.
