 UH Manoa Summer Commencement Exercises Take Place Sunday, August 10, at the On-Campus Special Events Arena.
Time and place:One ceremony-for both baccalaureate and advanced degree recipients-begins at 9 a.m. Special Events Arena doors will open one hour before the ceremony, expected to last about two hours.
Speaker:Earl E. Bakken, founder and former chief executive of Medtronic, Inc., the leading maker of pacemakers and other medical technology, and the inventor of the first external, battery-powered transistorized pacemaker.Widely considered the father of medical technology, Bakken has received many national and international awards. He has authored scientific papers and delivered lectures to medical, education and business groups around the world. Bakken and his wife, Doris, moved to the Big Island in 1991, and quickly became involved in local efforts to build a new hospital for North Hawai'i. Bakken has served as president of the board of directors of the North Hawai'i Community Hospital, which opened in May 1996.
Lei vendors:No lei stands will be on lower campus for this Commencement, but independent vendors are expected to set up along Dole Street. Drivers should anticipate traffic delays caused by lei sales to people in stopped cars.
No balloons:Balloons are not permitted inside the Special Events Arena.
Admission:A sign language interpreter will sign the ceremony.
Programs are available in alternate form for persons with print disabilities. Special parking and seating will be available for persons with disabilities and one guest; phone 956-6934 by August 1 to make arrangements.

Media access:

 

Media identification must be worn for access to restricted areas. Commencement participants may be interviewed outside the Special Events Arena before the processional begins or after the recessional exits the arena.

Transportation and parking:

 

The UH Manoa campus may be reached via TheBus, Routes 4, 6 or 18; for August 10 schedule information, phone 848-5555. Automobiles may be parked for free in either of the Lower Campus parking structures on Commencement day.

 Post-ceremonies:

 

 

 

Well-wishers may greet graduates after the ceremonies by the appropriate alphabetical signs on the grass fields mauka of Rainbow Stadium. The practice field signs are 1300­1500 feet from the nearest Special Events Arena exit; alternative meeting sites should be pre-arranged by graduates and their families if that distance will be too far for some expected well-wishers to walk.
