| UH Nominates Two from Windward CC for State Honors |
The University of Hawai`i has selected two employees from Windward Community College to represent UH for the 2000 Governor's Awards for Distinguished State Service and State Manager of the Year.
Windward CC Computer Specialist Scott K. Masuno has been nominated for the Distinguished State Service award. Masuno has taken the lead on a number of critical technology projects including coordination of community college efforts to assure that computer systems were Y2K compliant prior to the new year. Nominators praised Masuno for "his integrity, dedication and work ethic that make him an invaluable asset to the community colleges."
Masuno is a long time UH employee, at Windward CC since 1988, and previously with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at UH Manoa. In addition to his responsibilities as a computer specialist, he is a member of service committees and volunteers his musical talents at campus functions.
Windward's Dean of Instruction, Michael Garcia, is the university's choice as Manager of the Year. He's responsible for all instructional and academic support services programs at his home campus.
Garcia is praised as "an effective manager and administrator who has brought a "sense of camaraderie to the WCC campus. This has been especially important, his nominators say, as the university has gone through several years of budget cuts. "He has all the qualities that people admire in leaders, one said, including "honesty and competency, and he's forward-looking and inspirational."
Garcia has been a UH employee for nearly 30 years, serving initially as an instructor at Kapi`olani Community College, and then moving to the Windward campus in 1987.
Both nominees will be honored at ceremonies in the State Capitol auditorium on October 6 when the Distinguished State Service and Manager of the Year awards are presented.
