| UH Manoa Athletics Introduces New Logo and Uniforms |
Color Highlights Green, Black and Silver; Design Themes Reflect Hawai`i Roots, Strength and Traditions
The University of Hawai`i at Manoa Athletics Department today introduced a new logo design and athletic team uniforms that will be in use beginning with the fall sports season. The logo and uniforms emphasize the colors green, black and silver, and incorporate decorative patterns inspired by renaissance of the use of Hawaiian kapa designs.
Graphic designs and uniform treatments were developed with the help and expertise of Osaki Design, Inc., and involved several months of informational interviews, cultural research and a design review committee. Graphic designer and principal owner of Osaki Design Inc. is Kurt Osaki, a native of Kaua`i and graduate of Kapa`a High School where he lettered in football. Osaki is also a 1989 graduate of the University of Hawai`i at Manoa and the Art Center College of Design in California.
Ceremonies to introduce the new letter "H" logo and supporting graphic elements were staged at the Stan Sheriff Center. The new logo treatment has been painted onto the basketball floor in the Sheriff Center and will be incorporated into the on-field design at Aloha Stadium. New uniforms for the UH women's volleyball will be the first to debut this fall when the Rainbow Wahine take the court in the season opener on Friday, September 1.
A new line of logo apparel and merchandise is on sale at UH retail outlets beginning today.

To Unite and Move Forward as One
The Hawaiian theme that represents the new logo and identity of the UH Manoa intercollegiate athletics, translated into English means, "unite and move forward as one." As neutral as that might seem, the new logo design carries kaona that comes from the depth of each individual that wears the design. Kaona, or a "hidden or secret meaning" to what is being said, protects the uniqueness of one's belief.
Although the "H outwardly represents Hawaii, it also carries the significance of the Hawaiian expression and meaning of "ha." In Hawaiian culture "ha" means the breath: the spirit of life passed on to us from one person to another, generation to generation, with its lessons and success.
The colors:
Green
The use of the color green in our identity represents not only the richness of Manoa, but also spiritual prosperity and success. The UH Manoa campus itself is located in the heart of the rich and fertile Manoa valley. Green is also the color of the ti leaf, a symbol of good omen, and emblem of divine power.
Black
For many cultures in Hawaii, black is a color that is respected. For Hawaiian's, it takes them back to the Kumulipo, the chant of creation, referring to the symbolism "from out of the darkness," the kaona of which states that there is a new birth, or one cleanses to start anew.
Silver
Silver comes from the shimmering reflection of rainfall as it creates a blanket of mist over Manoa valley and a symbol of hope and victory, ultimately forming a bow or arc of prismatic color the rainbow that is frequently seen over Manoa valley.
The Patterns:
Although the patterns on the logo are inspired the by renaissance of the use of Hawaiian kapa designs, they are decorative. They do represent the characteristics of the different people who have come together to obtain knowledge, success and efficient skills.
The triangles are universally symbolic. The three points represent the balance of an individualthe body, mind and spirit. Ancient Hawaiians believed that each entity with these values could not stand strong without the other two. This is the significance to the specific three triangles within the "H."
The new logo, "simple but bold," clearly states that to move forward as one, we must be one with ourselves. Balanced in the mind, body and spirit. The "ha," or breath of life with its strategies of compassion, patience, values, knowledge and skills instilled by the leaders and coaches of the University of Hawai`i, must strengthen everyone who seeks it. From the depths of dark nothingness comes the birthing of a successful human. As the different individuals come together as one, the marks within the pattern design come to life and represent the diverse strength of a team and a state. UNITING TO MOVE FORWARD AS ONE.
About the designer:
Kurt Osaki
A graphic designer and principal owner of Osaki Design Inc., Kurt Osaki, is a native of Kaua`i, Hawai`i. He is a graduate of Kapa`a High School where he lettered in football, a graduate of the University of Hawai`i, and of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Collegiate Licensing
The University of Hawai`i,s Collegiate Licensing office is responsible for insuring that the integrity, indicia and marks of the University of Hawai`i are properly used in all advertising, promotional and commercial uses. UH has contracted for the services of BHPC International Marketing and Licensing as their vendor-licensing agent for uses of the University's marks. BHPC, in conjunction with the University's own Collegiate Licensing office, will be responsible for handling all licensing with vendors and businesses interested in using the name and indicia of the University of Hawai`i.
