Hawai'i Transportation Engineers elect Papacostas

Constantinos Papacostas, professor of civil engineering at the University of Hawai'i College of Engineering, was elected president of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Hawai'i Section, at the 1999 annual meeting of ITE-Hawai'i, held last month in Honolulu.

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) is an international, individual member, scientific and educational association. ITE members are transportation professionals from more than 80 countries. The organization aims to help meet human needs for mobility and safety and to promote professional development of members through the support of education, research, public awareness and exchange of professional information.

The Hawai'i Section of ITE was established in 1994. A special guest at the 1999 annual meeting was Jenny Grote, international director for ITE's District 6, which covers the western states, Alaska and Hawai'i. Besides Papacostas, the following 1999-2000 officers were installed at the Hawai'i Section annual meeting:

Vice President: Pete Pascua of Wilson Okamoto & Associates, Inc. Secretary: Terry Brothers of Wilbur Smith Associates.

Treasurer: Fred Smoot of Phoenix Pacific Inc.

Papacostas, who will represent the Hawai'i Section at an upcoming ITE international leadership conference, is a native of Paphos, Cyprus. He earned his bachelor's degree at Youngstown (Ohio) State University and his master's and doctoral degrees at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Papacostas believes that an efficient and safe transportation system is critical to the social and economic well-being of Hawai'i. As president, he will emphasize strengthening the relationship between the University and transportation-related entities in the public and private sectors.
