Yale Executive to Head University of Hawai'i Medical School

The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents today appointed Edwin C. Cadman to head the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, effective Nov. 1. The physician and Yale University professor of medicine is senior vice president of medical affairs for Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale-New Haven Health System and chief of staff at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

"We're delighted to welcome a physician administrator of Dr. Cadman's stature," commented UH President Kenneth P. Mortimer. "I can't think of a better candidate to address medical training at UH and serve as a key liaison in the state's vision of developing its health care industry."

"Dr. Cadman's academic experience will be invaluable in guiding the future of the UH medical school. He has demonstrated proven administrative skills, commitment to top-quality medical education and interest in medical research," added Dean O. Smith, senior vice president and executive vice chancellor of the UH Manoa campus, who nominated Cadman for board approval.

Since 1994, Cadman has managed all clinically related staff and activities and the 63 resident/fellow training programs at the 900-bed Yale-New Haven Hospital and supervised the hospital's epidemiology program as well as shouldering responsibility for operation of the Yale-New Haven Health System's regional health care network. He first joined the Yale medical faculty in 1976. After a four-year stint as director of the Cancer Research Institute, chief of hematology/ oncology and professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco, he returned to Yale as professor and chair of medicine and hospital chief of staff.

An elected fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Cadman has received numerous honors and awards, served on a number of professional advisory boards and national committees and been associate editor of three major journals, including Cancer Research and the American Journal of Medicine. He has been a visiting professor at numerous institutions, including Brown, Case Western Reserve, Northwestern and Georgetown Universities; the Universities of Michigan, Southern California, Illinois at Chicago and Hawai'i at Manoa, and the National Cancer Institute.

Cadman holds a bachelor's degree from Stanford University and medical degree from the University of Oregon. He completed his internship and residency at Stanford University Hospital and a fellowship in oncology at Yale University School of Medicine.
