Developer of Hawaiian Home Lands funds $200,000
scholarship for seniors at Nanakuli High attending UH
Abraham Samuel Nahulu, III, an outstanding graduate of
Nanakuli High School, is the second recipient of the Hoaliku
L. Drake Scholarship, a four year scholarship established by
Mark Development, Inc. Active in community services, Abraham
is involved in the Hawaii Special Olympic events, and
volunteers as a teaching assistant in the special education
classes at Pohakea Elementary during the summer. He is a
member of the Nanakuli High School Chapter of the National
Honor Society, a team captain, and was voted the Most
Valuable Player on the varsity football squard by his peers
and coaches. Abraham is a valedictorian and a 1997 Senior
All StarAthlete. Despite some degree of hearing loss, his
handicap has not prevented him from achieving his goals.
The Hoaliku L. Drake Scholarship fund was endowed by Mark
Development, Inc., as a way of giving back to the community.
Company officials say Mark Development feels a
responsibility to the Nanakuli district, where it has
developed housing for the State Department of Hawaiian Home
Lands. The builder established the scholarship fund with an
initial endowment of $100,000 in 1996, and a recent gift of
$100,000 to provide a four year scholarship each year for a
Nanakuli High School graduate entering a University of
Hawaii campus.
The scholarship is named in honor of Mrs. Hoaliku L.
Drake, in recognition of her work as former director of the
State Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, her work in the
Nanakuli community and her positive influence on the
youngsters in the community.
The first recipient, Welina Mie Kadota, a psychology
major at the University of Hawaii, will be receiving this
scholarship for a second year.
