UH Manoa Sociology Department, Outreach College, and UH West Oahu Social Sciences Department - in conjunction with the Hawai'i United Okinawa Association - present a series of forums: Uchinanchu Diaspora: Memories, Continuities and Constructions, July 3 through July 7. Programs feature scholars whose research has examined the historical and contemporary conditions that have encouraged Okinawans to leave their homeland, the conditions they faced in their host communities around the globe, and the kinds of livelihood, families and communities they constructed. . Coral Spawning, Tuesday, July 4, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Each year, rice corals in the UH Waikiki Aquarium Edge of the Reef exhibit spawn 2 to 4 days after July's new moon. Meet the author, Sally Engle Merry, and hear her discuss her new book Colonizing Hawaii: The Cultural Power of Law, describing how American-style Western law as part of the global movements of capitalism, Christianity, and imperialism, transformed the family, sexuality, and community of indigenous Hawai'i. Through her examination of a century of Hilo police court records, Merry documents the impact of the law, police, and lower courts in the lives of local actors.
