|Nationally renowned educators to address state-wide educational conference|
The Big Island will host two nationally recognized leaders in educational reform who will headline a special conference next month for K-12 teachers and administrators including charter schools. The conference, entitled "New Visions - Assessment in the K-12 Community," will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2001 at Kea`au High School from 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
W. James Popham is a Professor Emeritus from the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. His most recent publications include Classroom Assessment: What Teachers Need to Know, 2nd Edition (1999); Modern Educational Assessment: Practical Guidelines for Educational Leaders, 3rd Edition (2000); and Testing ! Testing! What Every Parent Should Know About School Tests (2000).
Mary Anne Raywid is a Professor Emirate of Administration and Policy Studies at Hofstra University and former director of the Center for the Study of Educational Alternatives. She has written extensively about school reform in addition to conducting and reporting research on small schools. In Hawai`i, Dr. Raywid is a consultant to the Department of Education in the creation of schools within schools and has taken and active role in the creation of Hawai`i Charter Schools.
Other conference activities will include presentations by the students and faculty of the Hawai`i Center for Learning Science Through Art, workshops by national and local experts, and showings of the PBS documentary film "Charter Schools that Work."
The conference is being sponsored by the University of Hawai`i Charter School Resource Center, the Hawai`i Center for Learning Science Through Art, 'Ike A'o, Kea`au High School and the University of Hawai`i at Hilo Education Department.
The fee for the conference is $15, and includes lunch along with admission
