$550,000 Endowment at UH Foundation Will Support Scholarships and Grants to Promote Chinese Culture

When Chun Ku and Soo Yong Huang died, a large portion of their estate went to the foundation they had established to promote all aspects of Chinese culture in the U.S. The endowment, at a book value of $550,000, will be administered by the University of Hawai'i Foundation.

The Chun Ku and Soo Yong Huang Foundation was established on March 2, 1973, by the husband and wife, who lived in Hawai'i. Chun Ku Huang had been born in Tianjin, China, and educated at Nankai College, where he was actively involved in Beijing opera. He was a business executive in his professional life in the U.S. His wife was born Ah Hee Young in Wailuku, Maui. She was an actress and appeared in such Hollywood productions as The Good Earth, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing and Flower Drum Song. Her stage name was Soo Yong.
