UH Research Head Named Interim Manoa Executive Vice Chancellor The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents today named Dean O. Smith interim senior vice president/executive vice chancellor-the top administrative post for the UH Manoa campus under UH President and UH Manoa Chancellor Kenneth P. Mortimer. Smith is currently the senior vice president for research and dean of the graduate division. Smith will fill the position, which was left vacant by the death of Senior Vice President/ Executive Vice Chancellor Carol Eastman last month, until Nov. 16, 1998 or upon appointment of a permanent person in the post. "Dr. Smith's appointment at this critical time will provide for a smooth transition in leadership for the Manoa campus," commented President Mortimer. "His familiarity with specific academic and research programs, the budget, faculty matters, personnel and other pressing issues facing the campus will assure continuity in administering the Manoa campus." Smith has served in his current post since April 1995, overseeing all organized research units at Manoa; the Graduate Division; and degree-granting units including the John A. Burns School of Medicine, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources and the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. Since joining the UH administrative team, he has established working relationships with representatives of the agricultural, medical, economic, scientific and legislative communities in Hawai'i and other external constituencies. A physiologist, Smith previously served as professor in the Center for Neuroscience and associate dean of the graduate school at the University of Wisconsin. |
