UH joins "Great American Smokeout"

University of Hawai'i President Kenneth P. Mortimer has signed a proclamation declaring November 20 "Great American Smokeout Day at the University of Hawai'i." Although individual students, faculty and staff have participated in the American Cancer Society's annual observance in years past, this marks the first time that UH as an institution has joined the stop-smoking effort, held on the third Thursday of November.

Kristen Scholly, UH Manoa health education coordinator, says this year's official participation in the Great American Smokeout will launch a round of increased efforts to turn UH campuses into smoke-free environments. The campaign will reflect guidelines suggested by the American College Health Association and Governor Benjamin Cayetano's recent Executive Memorandum regarding smoking and tobacco use in state buildings, according to Jane Hamel, a nursing practicum student at UH Manoa Student Health Services.

Photo Opportunity: Nov. 19 at the Manoa Student Services Center, volunteers and staff from UHM Student Health Services will be distributing educational materials and publicizing the national event.
