The UH Wind Symphony and UH Wind Ensemble will perform a range of concert selections, from modern to classical to pop. UH Manoa Outreach College and the Distinguished Lecture Series presents the free public talk "Snapshots: Glimpses of America in Change," which will be given by Anna Deveare Smith. The UH Manoa Earle Ernst Lab Theatre will perform "Machinal," a production that uses expressionist techniques to depict the plight of an Everywoman struggling to be an individual during the Industrial Revolution. UH Manoa Outreach College will give a free showing of the 1983 New Zealand film "Utu," which is set in 1870 during the wars between the Maoris and the Pakeha (Caucasian) amid the beauty of the New Zealand landscape. 1:30 p.m. Nov. 28 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29-30. The UH Hawaiian Chorus and UH Hula and Chant Ensembles present their semester concert with the theme "Aloha 'Aina," or "Love for Our Land." The performance will include songs and dances about the preservation and conservation of Hawaiian land and people and will feature students from the Music Department's Hawaiian music and dance programs. John Cheng, UH Hilo professor of philosophy, will speak about "The Chinese Civilization and the Silk Road." The lecture relates aspects of Chinese history and philosophy to Cheng's personal experiences leading summer tours of China for UH students and community members.
