Judge Jon J. Chinen Fund Benefits Students at the William S. Richardson School of Law

The Bankruptcy Law Section of the Hawai`i State Bar Association recently established a fund at the UH Foundation in honor of Judge Jon J. Chinen upon his retirement from the bench on September 30, 2000. The Judge Jon J. Chinen Fund was set up as an open fund, capable of receiving additional contributions, to benefit law students at the William S. Richardson School of Law, including activities sponsored by the school that directly benefit the students.

The Bankruptcy Law Section's three-year commitment totaling $7,500 has been designated to support a monetary award - The Judge Jon J. Chinen Award - for student externs from UH working with the Bankruptcy Court each semester. "The Bankruptcy Law Section's contribution to the fund is intended to honor Judge Chinen's service to the community and our country and to promote the Section's primary purpose of education in the area of bankruptcy law," according to Susan Tius, President of the Bankruptcy Law Section.

Judge Jon J. Chinen is well known in Hawai`i for his expertise in bankruptcy law and real property law. He was the first judge appointed to serve on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Hawai`i in 1976. As a member of the Ninth Circuit Conference of Chief Bankruptcy Judges, Judge Chinen was the author of numerous published opinions. His additional publications include two books on property law, The Great Mahele and Original Land Titles in Hawai`i.

Contributions in honor of Judge Chinen may be made payable to the UH Foundation - Judge Jon J. Chinen Fund. The Chinen Fund is an expendable account, but will be converted to an endowment if the gift total reaches the minimum amount required by the Foundation for establishment of endowment funds.
