Events at UH Campuses for the Week of Nov. 12-18

Kapi'olani Community College and the Hawai'i Recreation and Parks Association present the annual event "Christmas in November Breakfast and Diamond Head Arts and Crafts Fair." The UH Manoa Music Department present a performance by The Manoa Trombones and the Saxophone Choir. The Manoa Trombones - made up of students and professionals - will perform several original works. The Saxophone Choir will feature transcriptions and original works for the ensemble, including a new transcription by Todd Yukumoto. Tickets: $5 general/$3 students and seniors. 7 p.m. Nov. 12. Dr. Edward Shultz, director of the UH Manoa Center for Korean Studies and professor of humanities at UH West O'ahu, will host the free panel discussion "Globalize with a Fulbright Award." Three former Fulbright scholars - Ronaele Whittington, Silayan Casino and Lowell Frazier - will speak about their experiences with the program. 4 p.m. Nov. 13. Conference Room, UH West O'ahu. Learn how to take advantage of tax-saving measures by attending the workshop "Year End Tax Strategies for Small Businesses." The seminar will provide simple but comprehensive, tax strategies to minimize tax burden. The workshop is presented by the Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network, which is a partnership program between UH Hilo and the U.S. Small Business Administration. 9 a.m.-noon Nov. 14. UH Manoa Outreach College celebrates composer Aaron Copland's 100th birthday anniversary and his legacy in American music with the video screenings of "The American Way" and "Aaron Copland: A Self -Portrait." Composers George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, Charles Ives and John Cage are also featured in the first film. As part of International Education Week, the Office of International Affairs sponsors the International Fair and Cultural Performances. Pacific Studies 2000, the 50th anniversary conference of the Center for Pacific Islands Studies, will look at challenges and opportunities for the future of the field in Hawai'i and throughout the region. Dr. Edwin Cadman, dean of the UH Manoa John A. Burns School of Medicine, will discuss "Leveraging the School of Medicine" as part of the Hawai'i Society of Corporate Planners' ongoing discussion on the state's transition into the new global economy. The Kapi'olani Community College Koa Gallery presents its latest exhibit, "The Keepsake," new constructions by artist Helene Wilder. The gallery displays 17 wood boxes containing figures resembling ancient Egypt's mummified cats or tops from canopic jars. The November meetings of the Board of Regents will be held at Maui Community College. Board committees will meet Thursday afternoon, Nov. 16 in the Maui CC student lounge. La Bete (The Beast/The Fool)" will be performed at UH Manoa's Kennedy Theatre. UH Manoa's "Late Night in the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre" presents "A Way Home," an original play written and directed by Bill Carr. The program, which features dance and poetry, tells of a woman's struggle to find her way home after being captured by a brutal gang whose rituals lead them into a killing frenzy. 11 p.m. Nov. 17 and 18.
