World AIDS Day promotes awareness on UHM campus

World AIDS Day, observed annually on Dec. 1, is a global day of remembrance for those lost to AIDS and a global acknowledgement that there is much more work to be done in the fight to end the epidemic. The theme for this year's World AIDS Day is "Listen, Learn and Live." The University Health Services and Student Activities Council will host this year's World AIDS Day Fair at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Campus Center.

The national AIDS memorial quilt will be displayed on the second floor of the Campus Center. Public displays of the quilt have been an important part of World AIDS Day events. The quilt can be a powerful catalyst for discussions about HIV-related issues and serves as a dramatic focal point for HIV prevention and education programs.

Once again, the World AIDS Day observance will include a red ribbon campaign, in which people are asked to wear red ribbons to express their concern about this disease. Health Services will distribute more than 3,000 ribbons, which serve as a symbol of hope and help to strengthen efforts to stop the spread of HIV.

UHM also continues to support the Foodbasket, Inc. It is a non-profit group that helps to provide food for people living with AIDS. The community is asked to support the Foodbasket by donating any non-perishable food items such as canned goods at the Campus Center on the day of the event.
