UHM Co-op Program Congratulates Sulijoadikusumo and Chang

Goro Sulijoadikusumo of the state Department of Transportation has been named University of Hawai'i at Manoa Cooperative Education Program Supervisor of the Year while Yu-Ling Chang, a student working at the Tzu-Chi Academy, took student of the year honors at Co-op's annual awards ceremony Oct. 14.

Sulijoadikusumo was nominated by Stacie Saito, a former Co-op student. "He's an outstanding supervisor because he provides his students challenging work along with the proper guidance and support needed to accomplish those tasks," she says. The Express Commuter Ferry project was one assignment Saito worked on under Sulijoadikusumo's guidance.

Chang, a PhD candidate in linguistics, participated in the Co-op program as a Chinese language teacher in 19961998 and was recently promoted to academic dean at Tzu-Chi Academy. Chang says her Co-op experience has been valuable-enhancing her career goal to be a true educator. She also credits her Co-op experience toward the development of her dissertation on language teaching and learning issues in local Chinese language schools.

Finalists for the supervisor award were Margaret Mortz of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services, Kimberly Oshiro of Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children and Lance Yamada of the U.S. Navy.

Student nominees were Gilbert Madriaga, an architecture student employed at the state Department of Accounting and General Services; engineering students Primo Castro at the U.S. Navy and Blayne Taguchi at Aloha Airlines and Naoko Takahashi of Hawai'i Japanese School.

Cooperative education is a partnership designed to benefit both the student and the training organization or employer. UH Manoa students are given the opportunity to apply theories and skills learned in class to their Co-op employment and employers gain a committed and motivated trainee.
