University of Hawai'i at Manoa School of Nursing Dean Rosanne Harrigan has accepted an invitation from U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala to serve on the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research of the National Institutes of Health. According to the council's charter, 10 of the 15 board members appointed by Shalala for four-year, overlapping terms are selected from "the leading representatives of the health and scientific disciplines relevant to the activities of the Institute."

The purpose of the advisory council is to assist the secretary and director of the National Institute of Nursing Research on matters related to institute policies and activities. The council makes recommendations on applications for various research grants and singles out those projects that show promise of making valuable contributions to human knowledge.

Harrigan has been professor and dean at the UH Manoa School of Nursing since 1992. She is an advanced practice nurse with prescriptive authority who has practiced, taught and conducted research for more than 30 years. Harrigan has received more that $1 million in research funds.

In addition to honoring Harrigan and the nursing community, the appointment recognizes Hawai'i's contributions to the establishment of national health policies and programs.
