UH faculty trio looks at Einstein, weapons, peace Albert Einstein's life and his ethical considerations concerning the development of the atomic bomb will be the topic of a free lecture and panel discussion on Oct. 16 in Crawford 105 at UH Manoa. "Einstein, Ethics and the Atomic Bomb, 1900-1946" will be presented by Patricia Rife, lecturer with the UH Manoa-Maui Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree program. The presentation begins at 7 p.m. Interwoven in the lecture by Rife, a historian of science, will be an overview of the pioneering research by Austrian physicist Lise Meitner, a colleague of Einstein and the subject of a forthcoming book by Rife. Rife's extensive work in the history of science has led her to archives in Berlin, Cambridge, UC Berkeley, Princeton, Jerusalem and the Nobel Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Her work concerning the social responsibility of scientists has also brought her grants through the National Science Foundation Gender & Science conferences and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Participating in a panel discussion following Rife's lecture will be UHM physics researcher Mike Jones and Ralph Summy, the new director of the UH Matsunaga Institute for Peace. The lecture is being sponsored by the UH Matsunaga Institute for Peace and the prestigious John Templeton Foundation of Radnor Pa., which supports science-religion dialogue studies at universities worldwide. |
