UH Delays Spring Tuition Deadlines to Accommodate Hope University of Hawai'i campuses will delay tuition payment deadlines for one semester only this spring so that students who qualify can take advantage of the federal Hope Scholarship tax credit. The "scholarship" allows eligible students to claim up to $1,500 of qualified tuition and expenses paid on or after Jan. 1, 1998 as a tax credit on the 1998 federal income taxes. Although income limits and other provisions restrict the number of students eligible for the credit, UH officials decided to delay tuition payments normally required in November and December so that the families of students who do qualify can claim the credit for 1998 spring semester tuition.
Revised tuition payment deadlines are: Jan. 5-Kapi'olani and Windward Community Colleges Jan. 6-Leeward and Maui Community Colleges Jan. 7-Kaua'i Community Colleges Jan. 8-Honolulu Community Colleges Jan. 9-Hawai'i Community College and UH Hilo Jan. 26-UH Manoa Because the tax applies only to the first two years of college, it does not affect students at the upper-division UH West O'ahu campus, who are juniors and seniors. Following is a question-and-answer sheet that explains more about the tax credits. |
