UH Manoa Students Join President Clinton's Reading Program About two dozen University of Hawai'i student will earn work study salaries while helping school children to read under President Clinton's "America Reads" literacy program. UH Manoa is the first and, so far, only Hawai'i college to participate in the president's vision of placing 100,000 college students in the nation's elementary schools to spur young readers. The UHM students will read and tutor in 10 elementary schools and two preschools (see list below). Participants include a students from a variety of majors and communities and one non-traditional student who knows first hand the frustration imposed by a learning disability. The Assistance League of Hawai'i and Orton Dyslexic Association of Hawai'i
have provided free training for the UH students, and sessions have been
videotaped to assist future student tutors. The UH students will earn $6.75$8.75
per hour to spend about eight hours per week in the schools helping children
improve their reading skills. The tutors read to children, provide individual
tutoring and conduct activities that generate an interest in reading.
