Members Appointed to Advisory Committee to Review Applications for UH Presidency |
University of Hawai`i Regents Chair Lily K. Yao today named members of the Advisory Committee on the Selection of the President. Their charge is to assist the board in selecting a successor to UH president Kenneth P. Mortimer, who earlier this year announced that he will leave the presidency at the end of June 2001.
The seventeen members represent a broad cross section of university and community interests. As announced previously, the committee will review all applications for the president's position, create a non-ranked list of no fewer than five (5) semi-finalist candidates, and then submit a recommendation to the board for final review and consideration.
"I was careful to select individuals for this important job who not only represent the various constituencies of the university, but who also have demonstrated a sincere commitment to the institution," said Board Chair Lily K. Yao.
"All of the committee members have demonstrated leadership and experience in their fields of expertise," she added. "I believe that the balance in committee membership will bring forth the most qualified candidate for the job."
Regents approved a job description for the presidency at their meeting in September. It is hoped that a successor president will be selected during the spring semester 2001 to facilitate a smooth transition to new leadership over the summer.
Committee members include four regents (one of whom is a student), two additional students, three faculty members, three UH administrators and five individuals representing the community-at-large.
"I'm very pleased that we had broad participation in this process," Regent Yao said. "Nominations came from faculty senates, student organizations, administrators and the public. I am grateful that these seventeen have agreed to serve, and I am confident that they will approach this assignment with an appropriate sense of importance."
