The East-West Center Gallery and the UH Manoa Art Gallery feature concurrent exhibitions of work by 60 contemporary Native Hawaiian artists from Hawai'i and throughout the world. "Mai Na Ku puna Mai, Ho'i I Ka Pu 'olo," or "That which comes from the ancestors is returned as gifts," will also feature three free evening forums with commentary by participating artists. The first forum, "Seeing Hawaiian," takes place 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the UH Manoa Art Gallery/Auditorium. The exhibition will run from Oct.9-Dec. 22 at the East-West Center Gallery at John A. Burns Hall and from Oct. 9-Nov. 3 at the UH Manoa Art Gallery. For information, call 944-7341 or 956-6888.
UH Manoa philosophy Professor Thomas Jackson analyzes the philosophical views and values of childhood and children in the lecture "Do We Still Have Time for Childhood?" Former East-West fellow Dr. Saleem Ahmed continues his lecture series "What is Islam?" with this week's free public talk "Islamic Views." A signing ceremony will initiate a cooperative agreement between the University of Hawai'i Marine Bioproducts Engineering Center (MarBEC) and the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (IGNS) of New Zealand. Michael Walker, former assistant dean for Maori in Science at the University of Auckland, will give the free public lecture "Science, Education and Ma ori Development." UH Manoa Golden Scholars will be honored at a gala dinner. The event, which will be held annually, recognizes alumni who graduated 50 years ago or more from UH. More than 100 alumni from the graduating classes of 1929 through 1950 are expected to attend, and each will receive a specially minted medallion. Oct. 12. Chris Fung of the University of Auckland will present this week's anthropology colloquium, "Gender, Labor and Social Power on the Mesoamerican Frontier." University of New Delhi Professor Sumit Sarkar, a leading social historian of modern India, will give his final lecture in the UH Manoa Burns Chair Lecture Series, "Perspectives on Indian Social History Today."
