Philippines legislator J.R. Nereus O. Acosta will talk about issues facing legislature and President Joseph "Erap" Estrada "The 11th Philippine Congress and the 'Erap' Presidency" by the Hon. J.R. Nereus O. Acosta, member of Congress, Philippines Friday, October 23, 1-2:30 p.m. Tokioka Room, Moore 319, UH Manoa Presented by University of Hawai'i Center for Philippine Studies J. R. Nereus O. Acosta, popularly known as "Nerie," is a rising star of Philippine politics the University of Hawai'i at Manoa and the East-West Center can both be proud of. He finished his Ph.D. in political science at UHM with an EWC scholarship. After he returned to the Philippines, he ran in the 1995 local elections for the Provincial Board (equivalent to state legislature) of Bukidnon Province. He won by a large margin and at age 28 became one of the youngest people ever to serve in that post. In the 1998 elections, he ran for the Philippine Congress and again won convincingly. Now 31, Acosta is one of the youngest members ever elected to Congress and his political future looks very bright. His talk at UH will touch on some of the issues facing the 11th Congress and its relationship with the presidency of Joseph "Erap" Estrada. He will also give his views on current Philippine politics in general as the country enters the 21st century. The talk is free and the public is welcome.
