UH Events in November

Continuing through December 15. "Recent Acquisitions" of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts on display at Windward Community College Gallery 'Iolani. Works in all media by more than 40 artists including Reiko Brandon, Charles Cohan, David Graves, Sally French, Wayne Levin, Hanae Mills and Michael Tom. Gallery open 1-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. November 1-December 11. "At Home and Abroad: 20 Contemporary Filipino Artists," features more than 50 works of art by Filipino artists from around the world. The exhibit was organized by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco in association with the Philippine Centennial Foundation/USA. November 5-7. "Pacific Collections: Developing Libraries for the Twenty-First Century," Twenty-Third Annual University of Hawai'i Pacific Islands Studies Conference brings together speakers from libraries in many Pacific Islands. Panel discussions will cover such topics as current activities in Pacific libraries, bibliographic control, and cooperative efforts. The keynote address by noted Pacific historian David Hanlon will examine the changing practices of history and archival research in the Pacific. Other speakers will address the researcher's experience in the library and archives, the creation of Pacific Islands-related websites, researching Hawaiian history, and a teaching unit on Hawaiian historical sources. Karen Peacock, Pacific Curator, University of Hawai'i at Manoa Library, is the conference convenor. The conference will be held in the Imin Conference Center of the East-West Center in Honolulu. November 17-18. UH Distinguished Lecture Series presents its second guest for 1998-99, William Schopf, discoverer of Earth's oldest fossils. Schopf's public lecture Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in UH Manoa Campus Center Ballroom is entitled "Ancient Life on Earth and Mars: Extraordinary Claims! Extraordinary Evidence?" Schopf will also present a technical colloquium at 4 p.m. on Nov. 18 in POST 723 entitled "Tracing the Ancient Roots of Life: Solution to Darwin's Dilemma." The colloquium is co-sponsored by the Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, the Department of Geology and Geophysics and the Pacific Biomedical Research Center.
