Manoa Road Runners ready for Kualoa Ranch event November 1

The Manoa Road Runners are co-hosting the Off-Road Challenge, a four-mile run/walk through Kaaawa Valley, at Kualoa Ranch on Sunday, Nov. 1.

The course for the Sunday morning run will take participants along the floor of Kaaawa Valley, past the filming locations for Jurassic Park, Godzilla, George of the Jungle and Mighty Joe Young, according to MRR President Rick Varley, cooperative education counselor at UH Manoa. Entry fees are $20 before Oct. 24 or $25 after. Awards will be made to the top three male and female finishers in each of several divisions. All participants who register by the Oct. 24 early deadline will receive T-shirts.

Proceeds from the event go to the Manoa Road Runners' "Run for Higher Education" fund, which supports scholarships for UH Manoa students. The Off-Road Challenge at Kualoa Ranch is the second fund-raiser of the year for the Manoa Road Runners. The first, the original "Run for Higher Education" program, had club members recruit individual sponsors while they trained for the Honolulu Marathon.® Sponsors pledged a cash amount per mile. After the marathon, club members collected the pledged amounts from their sponsors. All pledges are paid directly to the University of Hawai'i Foundation, which manages the "Run for Higher Education" scholarship fund. After last year's Honolulu Marathon® the Manoa Road Runners presented their first scholarship-$1400-to Elizabeth Slattery, a graduate student in special education.

Manoa Road Runners' co-sponsors for the Off-Road Challenge are Runner's World; PowerBar; McKenna's Windward Ford, Mazda, Volkswagen; Running Room, YWCA, Hawaii Shirt Shop, UltraZone Ultimate Laser Adventure; 24-Hour Fitness, Lion Coffee Merchant Street Cafe and Kualoa Ranch.
