UH will host 1999 education computing conference
The Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) will hold its WebNet '99 conference in Honolulu, Oct. 25-30, 1999. The conference will be hosted by the University of Hawai'i. Announcing the details, AACE Executive Director Gary Marks commented, "We are delighted to be able to hold WebNet '99 in the hub of the Pacific Rim, and we are especially pleased to have such a strong host organization as the University of Hawai'i." WebNet, an annual international conference, serves as a multi-disciplinary forum for the exchange of information on the research, development and applications of all topics related to the World Wide Web. Previous WebNet conferences have been held in San Francisco, Toronto and Orlando. More than 1,000 delegates from over 50 different countries are expected to attend. The conference encompasses the use, applications and societal and legal aspects of the Internet in its broadest sense, with a program designed for participation by all who plan to use the Internet to access information, communicate, conduct transactions, or who develop applications for the Internet. UH Director of Information Technology David Lassner says, "Bringing major international conferences like WebNet to Hawai'i makes information about what's happening elsewhere more accessible to the local community. In addition, it provides our own local innovators and businesses a chance to showcase their accomplishments and services to an international audience through participation in the conference program and corporate sessions." Lassner is seeking support from local businesses to assist with conference sponsorship. The Call for Participation for WebNet '99 is on the World Wide Web at http://www.aace.org/conf/webnet/call99.html. Conference papers generally report on significant work in research, development or applications related to the Web. Presentation proposals are reviewed and selected by a respected international program committee, based on merit and the perceived value for attendees. The conference also includes invited lecturers and keynote speeches by internationally renowned experts, tutorials, panels, special-interest-group discussions, demonstrations and corporate sessions. AACE (founded in 1981) is an international educational and professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the knowledge, theory, and quality of learning and teaching at all levels with information technology. AACE accomplishes its mission through the encouragement of scholarly inquiry related to information technology in education and the dissemination of research results and their applications through publications, conferences, divisions/societies/chapters, and Inter-Organizational Projects. More information about AACE can be found at http://www.aace.org. The University of Hawai'i is a statewide postsecondary education system with ten campuses on four islands. Education centers and distance-education technologies including interactive television and Internet-based offerings extend the University's reach to residents nearly anywhere in the state. The system had nearly 5,000 distance education enrollments in fall of 1997. Earlier this month, the Progress & Freedom Foundation, in conjunction with Government Technology magazine, ranked Hawai'i second in the higher education category in a national analysis of state efforts to utilize digital technologies. |
