Regents name Clark Executive Director, Extend University Relations

The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents today named Joanne E. Clark executive director for university and community relations. Clark, who previously served as interim chancellor of the UH West O'ahu campus, has been director of university relations since June. The new position and office titles reflect the division's expanded responsibility for the University's expanded commitment to its community partners.

"Ms. Clark's extensive knowledge of the UH system, her training in marketing and her proven record of service on a variety of University task forces and committees make her an excellent choice for building community and alumni relationships and implementing public relations and media initiatives as UH enters the 21st century," commented UH President Kenneth P. Mortimer.

"Our primary focus in the coming year will be to build on town/gown partnerships, strengthen relationships with our alumni and tell the community about the wonderful things that are happening at the University," Clark said. Concurrent with the title changes is a proposed reorganization to deploy resources in support of these initiatives. The system-wide office will include three units-

· Public Relations and Special Events, which will incorporate marketing, media and special events management and other public relations functions.

· Community and Alumni Relations, which will serve as liaison to community, alumni and government organizations.

· Creative Services, which will provide editorial and design support for communication via print, broadcast, on-line and other vehicles.

A 24-year veteran of the UH system, Clark has served in academic, student service and administrative positions. In 1998, she was named UH manager of the year. She serves on the district board of directors of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and is a member of Women Leaders in Higher Education. She has also served on the Honolulu Police Commission, American Cancer Society board and City and County Committee on the Status of Women. Clark She holds a bachelor of education from UH Manoa, a master of arts from Columbia University and an executive MBA from UH Manoa.
