Seminar in the Center for Chinese studies focuses on "Exemplary Sodomites: Chivalry, Friendship and Love in the Late Ming Culture"
Dr. Giovanni Vitiello of the Center for Chinese Studies will lead the discussion on "romantic chivalry," or qingxia, as depicted in fictional 16th and 17th century sources.

Coco Anderson, assistant coordinator, says "the sexual ideology of the Chinese chivalric hero in relation to notions of masculinity and friendship figured prominently in the writings of some of the most radical neo-Confucian philosophers as well as in the first attempts by Jesuit missionaries to introduce western culture to their Chinese hosts."

The free event, fourth in a series of research seminars sponsored by the Center for Chinese Studies, will be held in Moore Hall 319 (Tokioka Room) on Oct. 7 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Faculty, students and the general public are welcome to attend.
