Hewlett-Packard Lab Dedicated at University of Hawai'i at Manoa

Hewlett-Packard (HP) executives joined Hawai'i Lt. Governor Mazie Hirono and University of Hawai'i officials today in dedicating 27 state-of-the-art computer workstations worth close to a third of a million dollars that provide powerful new computing opportunities to UH Manoa engineering and computer sciences students.

The state-of-the-art workstations donated by HP-24 to the UHM College of Engineering's Hewlett-Packard Educational Computing Laboratory and three to the Department of Information and Computer Sciences in the UHM College of Natural Sciences-are the powerful computers currently used by engineers to design products as small as an integrated circuit, as large as an airplane and everything in between.

"We are excited to be able to offer our engineering graduates experience with such sophisticated design tools before the leave campus," commented UH President Kenneth P. Mortimer.

"We are pleased to be a partner with the University of Hawai'i in this venture," said HP Vice President Lee Ting. "Students who have the opportunity to work on industry-standard equipment while still in college make valuable employees in industry."

"High technology is an important part of Hawai'i's economic future," commented Lt. Gov. Hirono. "The University of Hawai'i's educational strengths, enhanced by corporate support such as Hewlett-Packard has provided, are critical keys to realizing out potential in this area."

The donated work stations with supporting servers form the foundation of the Hewlett-Packard Educational Computing Laboratory in the College of Engineering, according to Paul Yuen, college dean. The engineering work stations will allow students to use powerful software as they design human-powered vehicles, concrete canoes, devices for physically challenged individuals and other engineering assignments.

Hewlett-Packard is a leading global provider of computing, Internet and intranet solutions, services, communications products and measurement solutions. HP has 120,500 employees and 1996 revenue of $38.4 billion. This year marks Hewlett-Packard's 25th anniversary of doing business in Hawai'i.
