Excellence in teaching, research and service recognized at Pride 2000 Convocation

University of Hawai`i faculty and staff from around the UH system were recognized for teaching, research and service this week at the Pride 200 Convocation.

The annual ceremony recognizes recipients of the Regents, Medals for Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Research, and other outstanding faculty and staff members who have performed exceptional service for students, the university and the community, and award winners in other categories.

Award Winners

The Board of Regents, Medal for Excellence in Teaching recognizes the importance that students, the faculty and the administration place on quality teaching. This award pays tribute to faculty for their extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity, and personal values beneficial to students.

The Board of Regents' Medal for Excellence in Research recognizes faculty members whose scholarly contributions expand the boundaries of knowledge and enrich the lives of students and the community.

Ralph Freese Professor of mathematics, UH Manoa

Francois Roddier Astronomer, Institute for Astronomy, UH Manoa

The UH Community College established the Employment Training Center's Outstanding Employee of the Year award to recognize excellence in teaching at ETC. The Center is an integral part of the University system that links secondary and postsecondary ecuation in Hawai`I through its programs for at-risk students.

Diane Nazarro Instructor in culinary arts, ETC.

The Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching is a Manoa-based award

that recognizes faculty members who have made significant contributions to

teaching and student learning.

The Francis Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching is a memorial to the late Francis Davis, who taught mathematics at UH Manoa and Leeward Community College for nearly two decades.

Anne Megan Evans Doctoral candidate, Theatre and Dance, UH Manoa

Robert V. Hunckler Instructor in G\geography, Leeward Community College

The Robert W. Clopton Award for Outstanding Service to the Community recognizes a Manoa faculty member who has accepted a socially significant role as an intellectual leader and exemplar beyond the campus and who has applied academic expertise to the improvement of the community.

James Mak Professor of economics, UH Manoa

Established in 1997, the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community is presented to faculty members in recognition of their significant contributions to strengthening ties between UH and the community.

The Willard Wilson Distinguished Service Award was established by the Board of Regents in honor of retiring Secretary of the Board Willard Wilson, to recognize extraordinary service and commitment to the University of Hawai`i.

Donald Bourassa Dean of planning, information and development, Honolulu Community College

The UH Manoa `Ohana Award for Outstanding Service to Students recognizes an individual for outstanding service to students, leadership in fostering a campus community that supports intellectual growth, personal development and civic responsibility of students, and contributions to the professional attitude and morale of student service units at the Manoa campus.

The Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Vocational Education was established by Elizabeth and Tadashi Kunimoto to honor the memory of their parents.
