| Regents define job for next University of Hawai'i president |
The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents today approved the job description that will be used in the search for the next president of the 10-campus UH system. The description follows; it describes the position as chief executive officer of the state's only system of public higher education and discusses the president's role in development, government relations, strategic planning and academic leadership, community relations and financial management.
The position description was developed with the assistance of Heidrick & Struggles, an executive search consulting firm, based on input from 31 discussion sessions with all parts of the academic community as well as representatives of business, government and the general public. Emerging from the sessions was a consensus that the next president must provide leadership for the system and be comfortable in Hawai'i's diverse community, observed William J. Bowen, Heidrick & Struggles vice chairman.
The sessions also produced positive feedback about UH, Bowen added. "There was not one person who was not enthusiastic about the University. They feel this is a great place that has great impact on Hawai'i," he said.
The position announcement will be advertised in appropriate local and national publications, including the Chronicle of Higher Education, and made available to higher education organizations. An advisory committee will review dossiers and submit a non-ranked list of semi-finalists to the Board of Regents. The board hopes to complete the selection process by spring.
