Saxophonist and UH Manoa music lecturer Todd Yukumoto will give a recital featuring the music and performances of artists Kenny Endo and Noel Okimoto. The recital, "Of Two Worlds," will also explore standard repertoire and new contemporary pieces for the saxophone. He will be accompanied by pianist Kelli Sato. 4 p.m. Sept. 17. Dr. Saleem Ahmed, a native of India and former senior fellow at the East-West Center, will deliver the free lecture "What is Islam? The Belief System." While at the East-West Center, Ahmed worked on agricultural-environmental policy issues and is now active in promoting cross-cultural understanding. 7:30-9 p.m. Sept. 19. The UH Manoa Center for Biographical Research kicks off its weekly Brown Bag Biography discussions, which will be held Thursdays throughout the academic year. This week, Douglas Bomberger, an associate professor of music at UH, will give the lecture "Nineteenth-Century Lives: Editing Brainard's Biographies of American Musicians." Noon-1:15 p.m. Sept. 21. Elise Mellinger of Hawai'i Pacific University will give the lecture "Valuable Women: Gendered Strategies for Success in Korean College Culture." University of Delhi Professor Sumit Sarkar, who holds the John A. Burns Distinguished Professor Chair in History for Fall 2000, will present the first of his lecture series "Perspectives on Indian Social History Today."
