In the first of three recitals in the series "Russian Art of the Piano," 13-year-old pianist Bronika Kushkuley returns to Hawai'i to perform the music of Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Ravel and Chopin. Kushkuley was the first-prize winner of three international piano competitions, including the 1997 Young Pianists Competition, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fishery Hall and Teatro Marcello in Rome. 4 p.m. Sept. 24. Former East-West Center fellow Saleem Ahmed will give the lecture "What is Islam? Essential Practices" after a free video screening of "The Five Pillars of Islam." Ahmed, who has been active in promoting cross-cultural understanding, discusses Islam's "silent majority" who have made the religion the world's second largest. 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Sept 26. Peter Hoffenberg, an assistant professor of history at UH Manoa, will give this week's lecture in the International Cultural Studies Fall 2000 lineup. The Koa Gallery at Kapi'olani Community College presents "Paintings and Poems," an exhibition of new work by artist Paul Levitt with written responses by his wife, Robin Lung. UH Hilo will hold a celebrity roast for Barry K. Taniguchi, president and CEO of KTA Superstores. All proceeds will go to the Mits Sumada Endowed Scholarship Fund to benefit students at Hawai'i Community College. Terry Hunt, an associate professor of anthropology at UH Manoa, will give the lecture "The Evolution of Cultural Elaboration in Polynesia: Case Studies from Rapa Nui and Hawai'i." Hunt - an archaeologist who has conducted field research in Hawai'i, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Papua New Guinea will discuss a recent theoretical model for reproductive tradeoff and cultural elaboration on the remote Rapa Nui. 3 p.m., Sept. 28. University of New Delhi Professor Sumit Sarkar, a leading social historian of modern India, will give his second lecture in the UH Ma noa Burns Chair Lecture Series, "Perspectives on Indian Social History Today."
