Indonesian writer and scholar Putu Oka Sukanta will give a lecture on freedom of expression in emerging democracies. Former East-West fellow Dr. Saleem Ahmed continues his lecture series "What is Islam?" with this week's free public talk "Islamic Views." UH Manoa College of Education Professor Joseph Tobin will give this week's anthropology colloquium, "Gotta Catch 'Em All: Studying Pokemon as Children's Culture." University of New Delhi Professor Sumit Sarkar, a leading social historian of modern India, will give his third lecture in the UH Manoa Burns Chair Lecture Series, "Perspectives on Indian Social History Today." Los Angeles director and actor Robin Scott Peters looks at the life of African American actor Ira Aldridge during two special events this week. Peters will give the Brown Bag Biography lecture "The African Tragedian: Ira Aldridge and the Challenge of Docudrama." Noon-1:15 p.m. Oct. 5. Peters will also present the one-man tour de force honoring Aldridge titled "The African Tragedian." This docudrama, which traces the life of the early 19th century Shakespearean actor, was developed from Aldridge's actual letters, reviews and photos. Tickets: $3 students, $12 general.

UH Hilo's Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes invites the public to a free symposium on hurricanes. UH Manoa meteorology Professor Steven Businger will explain the nature of hurricanes, how they are formed and whether Maui is susceptible to one in the future. The American Association of University Women will hold a panel discussion on UH autonomy, an issue to be voted on in the upcoming general election.
