Bioengineer tabbed to head UH Manoa's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources

PUNAHOU GRADUATE

The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents today named Andrew G. Hashimoto to be dean of the UH Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), effective Oct. 2. Hashimoto is vice provost for academic affairs and professor of bioresource engineering at Oregon State University.

"Dr. Hashimoto brings an exceptional degree of experience and professionalism, which will be essential qualities in leading CTAHR into the new century," commented Dean O. Smith, UH senior vice president and executive vice chancellor of the Manoa campus. "His background in biotechnology and agricultural engineering are extremely valuable in the increasingly technological field of agriculture and related industries." Hashimoto's expertise includes bioconversion processes, ethanol fuels and waste management systems.

The new dean brings familiarity with both Hawai'i-he's a 1962 graduate of Punahou School-and CTAHR, having visited the school as part of an accreditation team. He holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and master of science in environmental engineering from Purdue University and a PhD in agricultural engineering from Cornell University. He held professional posts at Cornell and the University of Nebraska while working with the Agricultural Research Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He also served as a research leader at USDA's Agricultural Engineering Research Unit before joining Oregon State University as professor and head of the Bioresource Engineering Department in 1986. Hashimoto received the OSU President's Beaver Champion Award for outstanding service to the university in 1992 and was promoted to vice provost in 1995.

Hashimoto is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association for Higher Education and American Society for Engineering Education. He has edited Biological Wastes and "Bioresource Technology journals and received a Japan Society for Promotion of Science fellowship in 1996.
